In telling Richard and Tony’s amazing story of struggle, LIMITED PARTNERSHIP will inter-cut intimate verite scenes and candid interviews with a wealth of rarely seen archival material: personal letters, photographs, print articles and news footage, including many press conferences and clips of The Donahue Show, The Today Show and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. We also own the historic footage of the complete DOMA Congressional hearing and vote from 1996, shot from the Senate floor.
LIMITED PARTNERSHIP has been documenting Tony and Richard’s story for the past eleven years. One of the main reasons they have decided to “come out” of hiding now is that they just want to be accepted as a legal couple living together in this country with all the rights and privileges of other couples. They don’t want to be seen as a couple with a “limited partnership”. They are also horrified that their court case decision continues to be cited, leading directly to the deportation of countless gay and lesbian bi-national couples. Richard and Tony realize that by telling their story in this documentary, they may be setting themselves up for another confrontation with The Department of Homeland Security and immigration officials. But they believe fighting for their rights and the rights of the other 40,000 bi-national gay couples is worth that risk. This film will reveal that Richard and Tony are the poster boys for the gay bi-national movement in America and earn them an important place in gay history.
